Apple sets an 18+ rating floor for apps with romantic AI companions

Apple’s new Dating and Relationships descriptor explicitly includes virtual companions with sexual or romantic content. Developers face a November rollout and a January declaration deadline; the notice does not establish how any individual app will change.

The feature definition matters

Apple announced the change on November 2. The new questionnaire descriptor covers dating or relationship connections between people and also virtual companions that engage users in sexual or romantic content. The stated 18+ floor attaches to that feature category, rather than to every application containing AI. [1]

Spicy's takeThat distinction matters for readers comparing companion services: look at what an app actually offers and how it describes those features. A general chatbot label alone does not answer the category question. Our reading concerns Apple’s published definition; we have not checked developers’ private questionnaire answers or tested enforcement. [1]

Two dates to keep separate

From November 16, App Store Connect adds the descriptors. Apple requires declarations when developers submit an update or change the age-rating questionnaire, with completion required for all apps by January 12. It also adds a Shared Location declaration for sharing real-world location with another person or group. [1]

Spicy's takeMacRumors’ November 2 report likewise distinguishes the November introduction from the January completion deadline. Its account is useful confirmation of how the notice was reported, but traces back to Apple; it is not separate evidence that the new process already works in practice. [2]

Spicy’s take: a rating is one piece of the picture

Spicy's takeAn age-rating change deserves precise reporting, especially around intimate software. The notice establishes a classification requirement and deadlines. It does not establish that a particular service has changed its model, removed a feature or demonstrated safer behavior. Treat those as separate questions requiring separate evidence; an age label cannot do that reporting for us. [1][2]
